is it the wallpaper or the plant?
Original gouache painting on archival watercolor paper.
6 x 6 inches with small white border.
This was part of the daily painting,Plant Portrait Series of February 2025.
Day 9, painted 2/9/25.
Back story:
By now I was getting more interested in “backgrounds” and exploring what kinds of things would make for good backgrounds in paintings with the subject being plants.
Wallpaper occurred to me and I set about doing a first Plant Portrait with wallpaper. Keeping to the “plant in the corner” thing which had become an unintentional thing, I Googled wallpaper and found one I liked to emulate and found another thing I've never really paid much attention to: wallpaper.
How do the patterns work, when do they repeat, how do they get the continuity? Stuff you have to figure out if you’re going to “recreate” it in a painting.
It didn’t take long once I started rendering this piece, that I noticed I was more into the wallpaper than I was the plant! Then I also noticed that the wallpaper WAS plant, like in some ways it was plant life, and that seemed interesting. Did I under consciously choose that?! Plants in other places than the plant?!
Left me looking: Which is more interesting, the wall paper or the plant?
Other plants in corners:
Nobody Puts Aloe in the Corner
Aloe in a Vintage Mustard Yellow Pot
