Back story: Prayer Plant, Praying? Do you know why they call a prayer plant a prayer plant? It got its name from the fact that its leaves tend to fold together at night, like praying hands! During the day they open up to catch light, followed by them folding them back up at night to “sleep”. That’s the legend for ya!

I became acquainted with this plant 3 years ago in 2022, the year my Dad died. I was house and pet sitting for a friend and I took on the added task, unasked, of over tending to their plants, which ended up including me helping myself to some cuttings for propagating. Among that plant stealing was my first prayer plant. Part of the reason I went heavy on the plant tending was because I thought a number of the plants weren’t doing very well, so I took them each, one by one, cleaned them up, pruned them, watered them accordingly, even repotted some. This was one of the plants that didn’t seem to be fairing so well. It was also a plant I hadn’t seen before, at least not in any way to take any notice. So I took a little cutting and took it home.

3 years later it’s one of my happiest plants, it has a “sister” plant I made from the very little cutting I started with, and they are both equally big and happy right now. These prayer plants are unique among my plant hoard in that I have particularly enjoyed learning about and watching them grow over the last 3 years and it was FUN to paint! Like Jade in February, it has a minimal feel in contrast to some of the other Plant Portraits in this series, which are bold and “heavy” with color. This minimal quality is part of what I most like about this one.

It could be argued that it feels like it’s floating and needs a background or some shadow, or some other such stuff that would make it not be a plant floating on a white page. I can imagine a college professor from undergrad telling me it’s unfinished and giving be a C+ for it. But I disagree. I like it like this, thus it is like this. Maybe you’ll like it too.

I think it would make for a good temporary tattoo! Stand by if you like that idea too! ;)
