the night plant circus

$154.00

Original gouache painting on archival watercolor paper.

6 x 6 inches with small white border.

This was part of the daily painting, Plant Portrait Series of February 2025.

Day 20, 2/20/25

Back story:

I know I read the book: The Night Circus, and yes this is where the title for this piece probably came from. I don’t however recall any specifics about the book, other than I recall liking it well enough, but no direct associations for anything specific other than the idea of night and circus and plants.

The title for me is about multiple entendres and unexpected meanings or associations.

It does bring to mind some more recent current events than what I was actively thinking about at the time of painting this: and that’s about “things coming alive at night”. I have a few times now stayed up late, and got to be witness to what comes out at night in our house and that has proved to be it’s own kind of show. Because I typically DO NOT like vague allusions, mentions, and things left out, like what is often done on the line, I won’t say this and then not tell you this is about BUGS.

What else about  this piece?

20 days in and it is entirely made up. There was no reference photo for this arrangement of plants hanging and maybe you can TELL that from the level of, or lack of detail! Maybe it occurs to you. Maybe it only occurs to you because I've told you, now pointed it out.

The (sub) series: landscapes inside:
The 4th now of this type:

1. “The Plant Shelf has a Space

2. Everything and The Kitchen Sink

3. the morning view at night

And now this one.

I recall while painting this piece, some thoughts:

I wonder what the plants think at night.
If I entertain the idea of plants “thinking”, what goes on for them, and at night?

Check out Plant Portrait Series of February 2025 if you want more story on this piece. If there is more, it will be in that Write.
